Birefringence - A Compelling Indicator of Optical Flaws

In the test below a RESOLUTION lens and a leading polycarbonate lens where placed between two layers of polarized film. The unretouched photos below capture the results as they appeared to the naked eye.

RESOLUTION Lens
Regular Polycarbonate Lens

A leading polycarbonate lens (right) shows extreme birefringence throughout the lens, while the RESOLUTION lens (left) appears flawless. Tests proved that the birefringence exhibited in leading polycarbonate lenses had a direct correlation to the optical quality of the lenses. Birefringence causes the light to bend and prevents light transmittance, both factors severely compromise the optics of the lens. The obvious uneven and mottled lens surface directly correlates to the extreme resolution loss and wide power variations revealed in the other lab tests.

This test, along with other lab tests that measured resolution loss and power accuracy, revealed that there was also a direct connection with the stresses created by the injection molded process (and revealed by the polarized film) and the optical quality of the lenses.

New RESOLUTION lenses are manufactured by a new Extrusion Compression Molding process (ECM-9™) which eliminates all material stress and results in a virtually flawless less – no birefringence, near nonexistent resolution loss and power accuracy to .01 throughout the entire lens.

RESOLUTION lenses are the only polycarbonate lenses on the market that provide precise optics throughout the entire lens area. Click on the links below for other lab test results.
